Efficacy and social validity of peer network interventions for high school students with severe disabilities (American Journal on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities – March 2017 pps. 118-137)

This randomized controlled trial examined the efficacy of peer network interventions to improve the social connections of 47 high school students with severe disabilities. School staff invited, trained, and supported 192 peers without disabilities to participate in individualized social groups that met throughout one semester. Compared to adolescents in the ‘‘business-as-usual’’ control group (n ¼ 48), students receiving peer network gained significantly more new social contacts and friendships. Although many peer relationships maintained one and two semesters later, their spill over beyond the school day was limited. Students and staff affirmed the social validity of the interventions. The authors offer recommendations for research and practice aimed at improving the implementation and impact of peer network interventions in secondary schools.

Childhood predictors of written expression in late adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: a longitudinal study (Journal of Intellectual Disability Research – April 2017 vol. 8 March)

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is the second most prevalent genetic syndrome and has a characteristic academic and behavioural phenotype. The primary objective of the current study was to examine the childhood predictors of written expression achievement in adolescents with 22q11DS. Written expression is an important skill that can impact an individual’s overall academic performance, potentially resulting in increased levels of stress and exacerbation of psychiatric symptoms.

Changes in objectively measured physical activity in adolescents with Down syndrome: the UP&DOWN longitudinal study (Journal of Intellectual Disability Research – April 2017 vol. 61 iss. 4 pps. 363-372)

It is a priority to understand that physical activity behaviour over time is a priority in Down syndrome population in order to design and promote succesfull interventions to maintain or increase levels of physical activity. We aimed to study 1 and 2-year changes in objectively measured physical activity among a relatively large sample of adolescents with Down syndrome.

Pain underreporting associated with profound intellectual disability in emergency departments (Journal of Intellectual Disability Research- April 2017 vol. 61 iss. 4 pps. 341-347)

Little information is available regarding the visits made by persons with profound intellectual disability (PID) to general hospital emergency departments (ED). This study aims to know whether persons with PID who attend ED are given the same type of diagnoses as people with no such disability.

A systematic literature review of the physical and psychosocial correlates of Special Olympics participation among individuals with intellectual disability (Journal of Intellectual Disability Research – April 2017 vol. 61 iss. 4 pps. 301-324)

Special Olympics (SO) is commonly cited to play an important role in the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). The purpose of the current review was to (a) synthesise key findings regarding the physical, psychological/emotional, social and/or intellectual/cognitive correlates of SO participation for individuals with ID and (b) highlight limitations in the extant research as well as directions for future research.
